The Lady Julia series took a sharp downhill turn in book 3, but I decided to give the author another chance. I now wish that I hadn't. The main character has become unrecognizable, and now acts like a very spoiled brat. Her attitude toward her husband's career is one example- Lady Julia decides to conduct interviews, look for clues, and generally sleuth on her own, which is great-- it's one of the original concepts the series is built upon-- but then she decides that she has to keep it a secret from her husband, Brisbane, who is a private detective. It is an immature game of one upsmanship that ONLY Julia is participating in! Also, exactly like the previous book which took place on the moors, this story is very boring for about 3/4's of the way into it. Seriously, I kept checking how much of the book was left, because no action or important clues had occurred/been revealed until the last 20-30 percent of the story. Please, don't waste your money or time, look for another cozy British mystery series.
Two stars for the action at the end, but it should have been this entertaining throughout.

Julia and Brisbane have been enjoying their extended honeymoon on the continent when her sister Portia and brother Plum catch up with them Egypt bringing with them a mystery. Portia's beloved who married and moved to India with her husband has been widowed, is pregnant, and believes her husband was murdered asks for help.

The four of them take off for India to solve Jane's problem. They find an isolated tea plantation and an assortment of intriguing characters. Jane's aunt-in-law and cousin-in-law each have reasons why they could have wanted her husband, the heir to the plantation dead, and who could want Jane or at least Jane's baby dead too. But they are not the only suspicious characters. Julia's cousins Emma and Lucy have also found themselves in the same valley. Emma, who may or may not have committed a series of murders, is dying and widowed Lucy has a secret suitor. The valley also contains an orchid-growing minister and his free-thinking American wife. They have two children - a daughter on the verge of adulthood and a young son obsessed with his scientific experiments. There is also the widowed doctor who is falling apart from grief and using alcohol and drugs to bury his pain. Last but not least is the White Rajah who is living in an abandoned monastery.

Both Julia and Brisbane investigate these interesting characters to try to find out, first, if Jane's husband was actually murdered, and, second, to protect Jane. The story is told by Julia who is very observant but sometimes draws incorrect conclusions from her observations. The characters are all well-drawn and fascinating people. The setting is lovely. The relationship between Julia and Brisbane is a work in progress as they try to define the boundaries of their relationship and balance her need for adventure and validation with his need to keep her safe and protected.

The story had a bunch of secrets that were gradually exposed leading to a shattering and life-changing conclusion.
Some reviewers say this is the volume she jumps the shark. I think it was the last one, but the teaser for this one about Jane had me buying the book. Julia and Brisbane's relationship needs a strong counselor, as neither is inclined to communicate with the other. When they are officially partners in crime solving, keeping info from each other is, well, DTMFA time.

Like all the books in the series, the plot moves SLOWLY. Very. Slowly. Julia does really dumb things and it's not all because she's nobility. She is spoiled and rather stupid in many ways, though she is good with people. I've come to realize that when the author gives her a lengthy conversation with someone describing an Important Character without giving a name (and sometimes a pronoun), the person Julia thinks they are talking about is decidedly NOT correct. It makes for an uncomfortable, obvious bit of dialogue. This shtick is repeated in each book.

I wish we could see Julia really buckle down and solve a mystery with Brisbane helping her.

The final plot twist did it for me. Nope. Buh bye, Julia and company.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve read all five novels in the Lady Julia Grey mystery series by Deanna Raybourn Silent in the Grave, Silent in the Sanctuary, Silent in the Moor, Dark Road to Darjeeling, and The Dark Enquiry. Set in late Victorian London, the books span eight or so years—Lady Julia is in her mid-twenties when she is widowed; she is in her early thirties in the fifth book. The March family siblings make up a delightful cast of background characters; I’m particularly fond of Julia’s sister Portia, her best friend and confidante. One interesting facet I enjoyed these books do a wonderful job giving a sense of the era, in particular of the class and racial prejudices that the highest of the aristocracy would have held, even those as forward thinking as the March family. In this way, the books pull no punches, shining a light on the times without glorifying things. Highly recommended.
